My head was down, my hand scribbling notes during The Meadows – Boulder City football game in Boulder City.  Suddenly I heard a man ask if I was with Bill Belichick.

I turned around to speak to the stranger, who was leaning on the railing behind the stands.

He was a joking, of course, playfully implying I was conducting a spy operation on the Eagles.

I didn’t get the joke. “Never heard of him,” I retorted.

The man had to do the tiresome job of explaining what he meant. It’s always frustrating when you have to explain the mechanics behind why a joke is funny. “Oh,” I said, carrying out the ‘o.’ “That Bill Belichick.”

I’m a little slow.

Later on I overheard a younger guy quietly ask the same man what I was doing as they leaned on the same railing. The man said he didn’t know and explained the Belichick remark he made.

I enjoy moments when you are being talked about, and the talkers don’t realize you are listening. It’s as close as you can get to being invisible.

I never turned around to explain what I was doing, but I did address the question in my mind. “What am I doing,” I thought. “I’m sitting amongst a bunch of high school football fans, in their stands -their house -and plastering information on a notebook.” I guessed those weren’t the only two who were wondering what the scribbling stranger was doing.

So someone doesn’t try to sue me for spying, like a Jets fan is doing to Belichick, be aware that a guy in his 20’s may show up to your game, sit amongst you, take notes and pictures, and write a recap on NevadaPrep. Come say hi. But please be careful how complicated you make your jokes.

It’s time to get down to biz-nass.

League play is upon us. This Friday we’ll be in Mesquite watching the Faith Lutheran Crusaders and Virgin Valley Bulldogs battle.

Both teams are 4-1. The Crusader’s only loss came on September 8th at the hands of 4A Fernley, 33-6. Virgin Valley fell to Nevada-slayer Hurricane, 24-14, on September 7th.

The game begins at 7 p.m. Coverage will include live updates on this blog. I’ll attempt sending updates at the end of each quarter.
